WELSH LANGUAGE GCSE

General Aims

The objective of the course is to ensure that pupils are able to communicate confidently, correctly and fluently through oral and written work whilst studying the Welsh First Language GSCE course.  There are opportunities to contribute to oral discussions and to respond to a variety of reading material – poetry, prose and drama.  There are also opportunities to write creatively and discursively.

Course Details

There are three aspects to this course:
  • Oral – Participating in individual and group discussions, giving information and expressing opinions.
  • Reading – Responding to a variety of reading material, both critically and creatively.
  • Writing – Writing correctly and effectively in Welsh.

Assessment Objectives

Coursework (over 2 years) – 30%

Three tasks:
  • Reading     – Creative writing based on literary material
  • Writing     – Expressing Opinion
  • Writing     – Presenting information or writing creatively

Oral Work – 30%

Two tasks:
  • Expressing Opinions (group discussion)
  • Presenting Information (individually)

Final Written Examination (2¼Hours) – 40%

There are two tiers:

  • A* - D (Higher Tier)
  • C – G (Foundation Tier)
 

WELSH LITERATURE GCSE

General Aims

The objective of the course is to encourage an interest in Welsh Literature and to raise an awareness of our literary heritage through reading and studying a variety of literary material in depth.  There are opportunities to discuss and respond to a range of reading material.
 

Course Details

A set novel and poetry are studied both critically and creatively.  The course also includes a study of literature as film.

Assessment Objectives

Coursework (over two years) – 25%

Two tasks:
  • One written critique based task on the candidate’s personal reading
  • One creative task based on a play

Oral Assessment (Spring Term Year 11) – 30%

  • Discussing literature as film

Final Written Examination (2 Hours) – 45%

Two questions based on:
  • discussing the collection of poetry studied
  • discussing the novel studied

There are two tiers:
  • A* - D Higher Tier
  • C – G Foundation Tier

 

WELSH ENTRY LEVEL

General Aims

The objective of the course is to ensure that pupils are able to communicate correctly and fluently through oral and written work whilst studying Entry Level Welsh as a First Language.  There are opportunities to contribute to oral discussions and to respond to a variety of reading material.  There are also opportunities to write in various forms.

There are three aspects to this course:
  • Oral – Participating in individual and group discussions, giving information and expressing opinion.
  • Reading – Responding to a variety of reading material, both critically and creatively.
  • Writing – Writing correctly and effectively in Welsh.

Assessment Objectives

There are 4 main aspects:
 
  • Oral Examination
  • Reading and Writing Examination
  • Coursework
  • Recorded reading and responding test
